Cute microscopic animals called tardigrades are found almost anywhere there is fresh water. They can also survive extreme conditions—even exposure to the cold vacuum of outer space—and their DNA can withstand a battering by X-ray radiation. Until now, researchers weren’t sure how they did it.
Tardigrades as a potential model organism in space research2007Ingår i: Astrobiology, ISSN 1531-1074, E-ISSN 1557-8070, Vol. 7, nr 5, s. 757-766Artikel i
Scientists recently revealed that tiny creatures called water bears are the first animals to survive exposure to space. Sending water bears into space is one of several ESA experiments looking at organisms which can survive longer periods in open space. What is a tardigrade?

Tardigrades can survive extreme temperatures and the vacuum of space – a supercomputer simulation of the behaviour of 750,000 atoms in and around its DNA help explain why
A sample of dehydrated tardigrades was exposed to outer space for ten whole days. After 10 days of exposure to space, the satellite returned to Earth. The tardigrades were retrieved and rehydrated to test how they reacted to the airless conditions in space, as well as Tardigrades are tiny, cute and virtually indestructible. The microscopic animals are able to survive in a pot of boiling water, at the bottom of a deep-sea trench or even in the cold, dark vacuum Glass-coated tardigrades can withstand irradiation, boiling liquids, extreme pressure, environments as cold as −200°C and up to around 150°C, as well as the vacuum of space without any protection (Coghlan 2017a). A tardigrade in a desiccated state fares much better with a 50 percent mortality rate up to 181 degrees Fahrenheit during 1 hour of exposure, but that heat threshold drops to 145 degrees Fahrenheit Tardigrades are animals of many names, most of which are derived from their unique physique.
